Setting up Square to work with Chexology
Step 1: Sign up for a Square account
- Click here to create a Square account. Please make sure to use this link so we can connect your Square account to your Chexology account for our partnership integration.
- Proceed through the setup process and be sure to complete the steps to ‘Activate your account to take payments’ (including verifying your identity, putting in necessary company details, and linking your bank account).
Step 2: Setup Locations
(This step is optional for those operating Chexology at different physical addresses)
- Go to the ☰ menu, select Account & Settings (sometimes under Settings) > My Business > Locations > and tap Create Location (blue button on the top right).
- Enter a name for the location where the Chexology kiosk will be used.
Step 3: Configure Square General Settings to appear on devices
- Go to the ☰ menu, select Device Management (sometimes under Settings) > Profiles > Device profiles > Create (blue button on the top right).
- Create a device profile name such as “Coat Check”
- In the Checkout screen we recommend the following settings:

- We also recommend not enabling passcodes in the Security section for speed.
Step 4: Add Devices
- Go to the ☰ menu, select Device Management > Devices, and tap the blue Add device button on the top right of the screen.
- Set a device location, if it applies.
- In the Assign settings screen, select the Device Profile you set up in the previous step.
- Create a device code name.
- We recommend matching the name to the device number found in the Chexology app under Settings > About > Device Information.
- Example: “Device 4.”

- A 12-digit device code formatted [XXXX XXXX XXXX] will now be created and accessible to copy (with the option to send to someone one site where the iPad is located).
Step 5: Register the device
- Search for the Square Point of Sale (POS) app on the App Store and tap Get to install it on the iPad.
- Open the Square app
- Tap Sign In but do not sign in with email/password.
- Instead, tap Use a device code.
- Enter the code created in the previous step.
Step 6: Pair a Square Reader to the iPad
- Make sure you are using the Square Reader and NOT the Square Terminal.
- In the Square Point of Sale (POS) iPad app, go to ☰ More > Settings > Hardware > Square Readers.
- Tap Connect a Reader.
- Press and hold the power button on your reader until the the lights flash orange. Then release the button and place the reader next to the iPad to pair it.
- Tap Pair to complete the Bluetooth connection.
- A yellow band will appear across the top of the Square App if the reader needs to be updated.
Step 7: Enabling Square in the Chexology App
- Open the Chexology app.
- Tap the Settings gear icon on the top left on the home screen.
- Select the Payments tab.
- Enable Payments via Square Point of Sale.

Tap Allow or Allow while Using App for all Apple settings that pop up.
- If you plan to take cash as a form of payment, enable Accept Cash.
- If you need to show Square receipts, enable the Show Receipt Screen option. This is off by default.
Step 8: Test a transaction
- To test a transaction, start tagging one or more items in Chexology.
- When you swipe to finish checking item(s) in, the Square Point of Sale app should open to a payment page.
- To test a cash payment, tap the cash amount at the bottom of screen.
- To test a card payment, dip or tap a credit card using the Square Reader.
- Make sure you see a green light on the Square Reader.
- Tipping options will appear if enabled in the Square app under ☰ More > Settings > Tipping.
- Make sure to refund that card payment afterward in the Square app under Transactions > Issue refund.
- You will be returned to the Chex app and the transaction will be complete.
